Best Time of Day for a Photoshoot in Venice: A Natural Light Guide

Sunrise, morning, golden hour, blue hour or overcast: how each moment changes the look of your photoshoot in Venice.

I never use flash. Light is the main character of my photographs, so the time of day shapes the mood more than anything.

Sunrise and early morning

The calmest time in Venice: few people, soft pale light and quiet water. Ideal for delicate, romantic and misty looks.

Late morning and midday

Strong, high sun creates harsh contrast. I avoid it unless we shoot in shaded streets, where reflected light can be very beautiful.

Afternoon

Light starts to warm. It is a good moment for relaxed portraits in narrow streets.

Golden hour and sunset

Warm, directional light that gives skin and fabric a golden glow. Perfect for couples and flying dress sessions.

Blue hour

After sunset the city turns deep blue and lights come on. Wonderful for dramatic, cinematic images.

Overcast days

Do not fear clouds: they act as a giant softbox and give a soft, painterly light.
